Demonstrate and practise:
Terms used in Bends and Hitches.
A bight, a round turn, a half hitch, a twist, an overhand knot.
A Running Bowline.
A Bowline on the Bight.
A Sheepshank.
TASK 7 GENERAL ROPEWORK
Revise and Practice Task 3
Demonstrate and practice:
Types and construction of man-made fibre cordage.
Belaying on a Bollard.
Racking Lines on a Bollard.
Making a Monkeys Fist.
Making a Heaving Line Knot.
TASK 8 SPLICING & WHIPPING
Revise West Country Whipping Task 3
Practise and demonstrate the following Splices & Whippings and briefly explain
their use:
A Common Whipping
Sailmakers’ Whipping
A Soft Eye Splice, Short Splice, Back Splice (in Hawser Laid rope)
Dogging
TASK 9 SAFETY
Revise Elementary Safety Rules for handling Roped and Hawsers Task 3
Orders and Terms used in handling hawsers, ropes and cables.
Care and maintenance of cordage.
Safe Working Loads.
Handling and uses of rigging tools and equipment.
TASK 10 GENERAL RIGGING
Revise Task 4
Demonstrate and practice:
Types of hooks, shackles and thimbles and their uses.
Mousing a hook and shackle (wire or twine).
Making a common strop.
Square and Diagonal Lashings.
Flat Seizing.
Types of whips and tackles.
Reeving to Advantage and Disadvantage.
Racking and Choking.
TASK 11 RIGGING EVOLUTION PRACTICAL
Plan and execute:
A Practical Rigging Exercise.
TASK 12 BASIC SAILMAKING
Demonstrate and practise:
Use of Sailmaker’s Needles, Palm and tools (from those available in unit).
Basic sewing skills – Sailmaker’s Darn, Flat Seam.
Produce a practical item in canvas (eg small bag or cover).
