Obtain and understand a weather forecast.
Show basic knowledge of sources for obtaining forecasts.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the information contained in forecasts and their impact on a group in open countryside and camping overnight.
Select appropriate clothing and equipment.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of types of expedition rucksack.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the different materials and their qualities in windproof/waterproof clothing.
Demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of individual clothing suitable for overnight expeditions.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the standards of sleeping bags available.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of different types of cookers and be proficient in the use of a chosen cooker.
Show an understanding of expedition foods and nutrition requirements for expeditions.Plan and carry out an expedition.
(Expedition must include two nights at different campsites for all assessments).
Plan an expedition to include two nights at different campsites. The route to cover a minimum of ten kilometres on the first day
and six kilometres on the second day. A five kilometre route is to be carried out in darkness or bad visibility.
Demonstrate satisfactory ability to;
complete a route card, select escape routes, estimate time and distance using Naismiths’s rule.
Demonstrate knowledge of; map scales, conventional signs, contours and other methods of showing relief, grid references.
Demonstrate satisfactory ability to navigate in open countryside by relating map to ground. Set map to ground without a compass.
Demonstrate an understanding of the use of a compass.
Set map by a compass.
Demonstrate an ability to use both grid and magnetic bearings, and find position by resection.
Demonstrate competence in navigation in poor visibility using bearing and pacing.Carry out an overnight camp.

Demonstrate knowledge of; the organisation of a camp and individual tents, packing and reusing wet tentage, group and personal

causes, signs and symptoms, prevention and treatment of Hypothermia, Hyperthermia,
Sunstroke, Sunburn.
Show a satisfactory knowledge of procedure in the event of an accident involving injury, and the causes and prevention of
accidents associated with camping.Demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities of a leader.
Show a clear understanding of access and conservation issues:
Land clearance procedure, Observation of the Country Code, footpath erosion, conserving animal and plant life, the pressure on the
countryside and the differing needs of other users.
Demonstrate party management; Pace, individual needs and strengths and weaknesses of group members, quality of the experience.
Demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of the impact of a campsite on the countryside and the management of an overnight camp.
